According to the 2018 Liberty Mutual Workplace Safety Index, nonfatal workplace injuries cost U.S. businesses nearly $60 billion in direct costs alone. That means that nonfatal injuries are costing U.S. businesses more than $1 billion every week. 64% of the costs of the top ten non-fatal injuries are related to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), which Worklete is focused on preventing.
Half of the top 10 injuries cited by Liberty Mutual are musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), including overexertion involving an outside source, falls on the same level, other exertions or bodily reactions, slip or trips without a fall, and repetitive motions involving microtasks. When added together, these injuries are costing U.S. companies $32.9 billion in workers’ compensation costs per year.
The study used a combination of data from Liberty Mutual, The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the National Academy of Social Insurance to determine which injury types caused workers to miss six or more days of work and ranked them by total workers’ compensation cost.
As the New York Times put it, U.S. Businesses are spending $1B a week on MSD’s that are completely preventable.
